Born and raised in the church at the age of 8,
Kathy gave her heart to Christ.
"I enjoyed my relationship with God, going to church,
singing in the choir and in different church related ministries.
However, during my teens, I went through a period of rebellion".
This culminated with her first year of college where she found herself
in a dark place and away from the life she knew in Christ.
Nearing the end of her first year in college, her desperation
became so overwhelming to take life.
"During that time, as I cried, hanging over the balcony on the
twelfth floor of my apartment building, God began to speak to me
very clearly and reminded me that I had much more to live for.
He also reminded me that His promises regarding my future were true.
I felt an unseen hand pull me away from the balcony."
That hand has lead Kathy from near death to a vibrant and energetic
life of ministry. On Sunday afternoons, while patrons enjoyed a
sumptuous Sunday Brunch Buffet, including breakfast favorites,
made-to-order omelets and pastas, Kathy Grant Mahon, with her band,
Chosen delivered the dessert. "Patrons stand on chairs and wave
napkins frantically in the air - they're not asking for more maple syrup,
they're enjoying the stirring gospel music of Kathy Grant Mahon and
Chosen" (Centretown News). A concept made famous in New York City,
it one of its kind in the city of Ottawa (beginning in 1999) and ran
for three years as the only regular and longest running 'Gospel show'
in Canada.
Since she re-dedicated her heart and life to God that fateful night,
He has kept His word and has continued to keep her, and like he did
for Abraham of old, continues to renew His promises throughout all
the events in Kathy's life. The promises God made to Kathy regarding
her future have been kept even things that perhaps were once thought impossible.
Over the last 13 years of waiting for the fulfillment of God's promises God
showed His hand by permitting amazing opportunities for Kathy to grow.
She has been privileged to appear before 35 Heads of State including in 2001,
her distinguished list grew to include the President of the United States,
George W. Bush, the US Secretary of State, Colin Powell; performed at events with,
Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, Vickie Winans, Richard Smallwood, Dorinda Clark-Cole,
James Hall, Maurette Brown Clark, Ricky Dillard & New G., Hezekiah Walker and the
Love Fellowship Choir, Commissioned and O'Landa Draper, The Reverend Al Green and
James Brown; at the World Famous Apollo Theatre in Harlem, New York (televised on
"Showtime at the Apollo"), toured Europe with legendary Blues, Gospel
singer and actress, Linda Hopkins as member of the Portugese tour of
the Harlem Gospel Singers. She's performed on Canada's 100 Huntley
Street and on the Bobby Jones Gospel Explosion.
Kathy's testimony is that of a SURVIVOR. There are many today
who feel that they may have gone past their time -- that it is too
late and that they have missed their window of opportunity to
realize their dreams, but not Kathy.
In November 2002, her win at the Gospel Music Association (GMA)
sponsored "Academy of Gospel Music Arts", held at the prestigious
Prairie Bible Institute, in Three Hills Alberta led to a semi-final
berth at GMA's summer competition held in Estes Park, Colorado
in August 2003. Kathy's self-titled EP released in January 2003
was nominated for a Canadian Urban Music Award (UMAC), won the
2003 MAJA Award for Canadian Gospel Song of the Year and received a
2004 Vibe Award nomination for Urban Soul Album of the Year.
Again, she received multiple nominations including 2004
Contemporary Gospel Album of the Year from the Canadian Gospel
Music Association.
The personal and perhaps underlying message of KGM and FREE
is that dreams and ministries do not HAVE to be aborted.
It's a triumphant message that "these three things abide" -
Faith (belief in God and in oneself), Hope (hope that God
will deliver you from devastation to celebration), and Love
(a love more blissful and amazing than ever imagined).
Kathy has experienced this unconditional love, hope and
the faith of the forefathers, which has empowered her to
minister the Gospel in authority and anointing.
As long as God is with you, it is never too late to give
birth. God assured Kathy that He is not a man that He should
lie; if He said it, it shall come to pass. Like Sarah, Rebecca,
the man at the pool of Siloam, the Blind beggar, Elisabeth, Job
and so many patriarchs of faith who waited for their desires
to be realized, God proved to be faithful to Kathy in the end.
And God continues to say the same thing and renew his covenant
like he did with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Moses of old.
Once again in 2005, Kathy received 5 nominations from the
2005 MAJA Awards including Artist of the Year and Album of the Year.
Notwithstanding all these accomplishments, as she lives out
the confirmation of His word, Kathy is seeking after God.
Without Him, Kathy knows she can do nothing. Her accomplishments
past and future pale in comparison to saving of souls.
This thought is the inspiring force in her journey to use
her ministry and blessings, as a tool of the Gospel to bless others.
Kathy has waited a long time for the Lord to release her
to her purpose. Although patience is something Kathy was
not immediately willing to practice, in patience she learned
to posses her soul until her change came. In this, she
understood the character of hope, faith and the love of God.
This is the gospel of Jesus Christ and the ultimate message of FREE.
